The weekly program

A city kitchenIllustrative narrative
People seated around a long workshop table.
They meet when they said they would.

A day people know

The practical thing — a meal, a conversation, a need dealt with — is there because the program is, not because someone happened to arrive with it. The notice has not changed since March.

The chair at the end

An older man sits at the end of the table and does not eat much. He comes to hear who else has come. When he is away, the person who serves asks after him on the way home. That question is part of the program, though it does not appear in a budget line of its own.

How to come back

A social program is only real if a person can find it next week. The page for the program says what the work is. The schedule is what makes it trustworthy.

Enough to take home

There is a second portion, packed without a speech. People who need it know where it is kept. The dignity is in the lack of announcement.

These narratives are written for the demonstration. They describe the kind of work Aleria is built to hold. Names are composite. They are not case studies of real individuals.
