The weekly table

Practical care on a day people already know, built to sit beside learning rather than replace it.

OngoingFour city kitchens
A box of food being passed from one person to another.

The same afternoon, the same kitchen. A meal and a conversation a person can expect.

A program, not a moment

The offer is practical, and it has a day. A person should know when to come back, and how to ask to take part, without waiting for an announcement.

The empty chair

The list is short on purpose. It records who usually comes, so an absence is visible. The follow-up is a question, not a file.

Beside the other work

Education and community stay linked from here. A meal does not stand in for a lesson, and a lesson is not asked to stand in for a meal.

Goals

  1. 01Hold the table every week in each kitchen, including the weeks that are quiet.
  2. 02Keep a simple note of who was not there, and follow it the next week.
  3. 03Leave enough food that a person can take a portion home without asking twice.

Timeline

  1. 2022One kitchen. A winter kitchen proved that people would come back if the day did not move.
  2. 2024A second and a third. The pattern was copied only where a local host would keep the keys and the list.
  3. 2025Beside the classroom. Two of the kitchens now share a building with an open classroom, so a child and an adult can be in the same place for different reasons.

The fund

The weekly table fund73%

$351,000 raised of $480,000 goal Illustrative

People come because the day does not move. The fund covers food, the hire of the kitchen, and the person who writes down who was missing, so the absence can be asked about next week.

How to help

A gift toward the weekly table buys the repetition: food, the space, and the person who notices an empty chair. Write if you want the gift attached to a particular city.
